TRAVELING TO POLAND

I made travel arrangements to go to Krakow, Poland, at the end of October to get my visa. It would be a quick trip, just long enough to secure the visa and be back within forty-eight hours.

I called Katya and asked her to come and stay with Jake while I was gone. When she arrived, she said, “Kim, my husband and I have discussed this and I want you to know. If everything fails with your adoption, we would like to try to adopt Jake. He will be with a good Ukrainian family. You know my family. I don’t know how we will afford it, but I understand the government is helping Ukrainians with adoptions, so we will manage somehow.”

I didn’t know what to say; I was stunned.

“We both think he should be with you,” she continued quickly. “He is your son. But you will not have to worry about him. If everything goes wrong, he will have to go back to the orphanage for a short time, but we will visit him every day. And we will try to adopt him.”

“Thank you, Katya. If it came to that, Jahn and I would help you, financially, spiritually, all we could.” I don’t know how my heart could take this, I thought, but I will trust you, God, if this is what you have in mind.

It provided me such comfort to know that he would be loved and taken care of. Their sacrifice was also a very Christian thing, because Ukrainians had such suspicions of children with HIV, and it meant a lot to me to know they were willing to take him in. That’s how strong her love was for Jesus, and perhaps now, for Jake.

It was a bittersweet moment for both of us.
